Lesbian Political IssuesLet’s face it – the world isn’t as open as many might want it to be. While the idea of love is completely acceptable, many people think there is just one way to love someone and that there is only one gender combination that is allowed. But though the idea of being a lesbian might seem to be a modern occurrence, this is far from the case. Throughout history, lesbians have been a part of the culture and a part of society. Since equality is the current political movement, it is only natural that lesbians begin to grow all the more demonstrative when it comes to their rights. Gay MarriageOne of the hottest political issues to date is the idea of gay marriage. Most states do not perform these ceremonies and they will not recognize gay marriages that are performed in states that have legalized them. Gay marriage seems to be an issue of categorizing the concept of what a ‘good’ marriage is. In the case of lesbians, marriage would allow for more tax credits, more protection in times of sickness and death, as well as health care from a partner who might be the sole provider. At the present time, the argument wages on as women try to get the same rights as others who are married. Lesbian PartnershipsSome states have begun to recognize the idea of a same-sex partnership, but this is not the same as a marriage. While being a step in the right direction, partnerships also help to create more legal protection for a lesbian couple. However, since this is simply deemed a ‘partnership,’ these rights can also be extended to heterosexual partnerships, which might seem to deflate the power that this agreement could give to gay couples. Workplace EqualityThough outright workplace inequality is something that isn’t talked about as often anymore, it’s certainly the case in many workplaces. While lesbians may get jobs that are suited to their talents and skills, they might also have troubles with getting the proper wage for their positions. In an effort to keep the workplace equal, many lesbians have decided to keep their sexuality under wraps, however, this also creates problems for lesbians when they want to share their lives with others – or they want to bring a partner into their work environment. Lesbians have a number of additional political issues that need to be addressed in order to help gay rights advance. Of course, homosexual males, transgenders, transsexuals, and queer identified people also are speaking up for their rights. Because no matter what you might identify as, everyone deserves to have the same legal status of marriage, the same tax breaks that married couples get, the same wages that heterosexual people have, etc. Everyone deserves to have it all – no matter who goes to bed with them at the end of the night. |
